Blank Canvas Studios encourages artistic expression in individuals with developmental disabilities in St. Charles

On October 9th, 2009, RHD-Missouri’s Blank Canvas Studios is hosting its’ second art exhibit. RHD-Missouri has been providing services to people with developmental disabilities in the St. Louis and St. Charles areas since May of 2008. In February of 2009, St. Charles became home to its’ first arts-based day program, Blank Canvas Studios.

Blank Canvas Studios’ goal is to provide adults with developmental disabilities an outlet for unbridled creativity and self-expression. Each individual is given the tools and materials to create art and the support to define themselves as artists.
The artists work closely with professionals who have knowledge in a variety of areas such as painting, sculpting, graphic design, music, photography and videography. The studio staff assists the artists in developing their ideas and encourages them to be expressive through these artistic mediums. At the inaugural exhibit in May of 2009, Blank Canvas Studios hosted over 300 community members and sold $5000 worth of original artwork. On October 9th, the artists have another opportunity to showcase their artwork and demonstrate their growth as artists in the past five months.
The exhibit will be from 6-9 p.m. at Blank Canvas Studios, 122 Point West Boulevard, St. Charles, Missouri, 63301. For more information call 636-724-6616 or visit http://www.rhd-mo.org/. Private viewings are available by appointment.

Roaring Lions of University City

Here is an interesting event in the community that Genevieve Esson shared with us. She was one of 9 artists chosen for the 100 year anniversary of the Liongate and The Historical Society Of University City intends to host a Community Art Project called the "Roaring Lions of University City" from June 12 to September 12, 2009, for the purpose of promoting tourism and civic pride, increasing visibility of the arts community and the community at large, and raising money for non-profit and civic ventures..

On Saturday morning, June 13th at 9 am they will host a scavenger hunt with clues as to the location of the lions. Banners in the Loop and PR materials will be sent the week the lions come home. On Saturday, September 12, the lions will be relocated to Heman Park near the pool for a silent auction. They will be on display all day. Unsold lions will be placed in U City Parks or destroyed unless you as an artist would like it returned to you. A T-shirt will be made of the nine lions and sold throughout the summer, commemorating this project. Rack marketing cards will be distributed to all tourist locations and venues. Your lion’s location, your name and the sponsor of the lion will be on the marketing card.We are all very excited about the Roaring Lions of University City.

The name of Genevieve's lion is: Camolion, it is short for camoflouge. The lion camoflouges with his surroundings wherever he goes. He becomes invisible with the landscape. Like an animated cartoon, constantly moving and blending in with the background. He reflects his environment. He is supposed to send a message of love and beauty, for people to take better care of each other and the planet. If we treat each other better, maybe the planet will not suffer as much. The Scavenger Hunt starts at 9am on Saturday, June 13th. I cannot make it to the Scavenger Hunt, Genevieve wii also have an art booth at the Pagan Picnic that very same day from 10-6pm.

Not too late to register for the Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday!

The Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure® is a 5K Walk or Run event. It is non-competitive, but we do provide clocks along the route and at the finish line if you wish to keep track yourself. You can choose to run or walk all 5K (about 3 miles) or choose to cut off at our 1 mile point. Runners begin the event, followed by the walkers. Visit the website to sign up!
If you can't race, you can donate to the cause on the website as well.
Resident Artist Lisa Ober was recently commissioned by the Archdiocese of St. Louis to paint the portrait of Archbishop Raymond Burke. She was chosen from many talented artists for this prestigious commission. It will hang in the Archbishop’s residence along with other commissioned portraits that go back decades. The portrait is 36" x 48", displaying the Archbishop lifesize, and was painted in oil on prepared panel.

Be sure to visit Lisa's blog, where you can see several other recent portraits she has completed, including several commissioned by the St. Louis Rams.
Congratulations Lisa, on yet another wonderful portrait!
